How this site handles your information

Who is responsible

This site belongs to Rory Fairweather-Neylan, a software engineer based in San Martín de los Andes, Argentina. He decides how the information described on this page is used.

The contact form

When you send a message, the form collects your name, your email address, the topic you choose and your message. They are used only to read your message and reply to you.

Each message is saved in Airtable, and a notification with its contents is posted to Rory's Slack workspace so he sees it quickly. Both companies are based in the United States and handle the message on his behalf, using the safeguards they offer for international transfers.

The legal basis is the steps you ask for before any work together or, for a simple hello, Rory's legitimate interest in answering his messages. A message is deleted within twelve months of your last exchange. Where work follows, the records that come with it, such as contracts and invoices, are kept for as long as tax and company law require.

The AI guide

The site offers a second way to look around: an AI guide that shows you the part of the site you ask about. It is switched off until you choose it, it says plainly that it is an AI, and the traditional site is one click away at any point.

When you send the guide a message, that message and the last few you sent go to Mistral AI, a company in France, whose model writes the reply and decides which part of the site to show. The work stays on their European service, and the messages are not used to train their models. Your name and email address are never sent there. If you ask the guide to put you in touch, it fills in the contact form in your own browser, and you check it and send it yourself.

The conversation itself is kept in your browser tab, along with your choice of view, so a refresh does not lose them and closing the tab ends the conversation. None of it is saved on a server. To keep the guide affordable and to stop it being abused, the site counts how many messages come from your connection, using a disguised form of your IP address that cannot be turned back into the original. Those counts hold no message text, are stored in Frankfurt and expire within a day. The basis for all of this is legitimate interest: showing visitors the right part of the site, and keeping it running at a sensible cost.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes technical details such as your IP address and browser type to deliver pages and keep the service secure. Rory does not use these details to identify visitors.

Cookies and storage

The site sets no cookies. If you switch between light and dark mode, your choice is saved in your own browser so the next page matches. It never leaves your device.

Your rights

You can ask to see the information held about you, to correct it or have it deleted, to limit or object to how it is used, or to receive a copy of it. Requests are answered within one month. You can also complain to a data protection authority, such as the one where you live.
